Setting the Bar Pretty High

12 Jul

Tonight my boys and I watched an insipid dating show called ‘Take Me Out’. I had never seen it before but the boys watched it at their dads and raved about how great it was so we watched. It is pretty funny in an “I’m scared for society” sort of way but hell, I feel that way about lots of things. It was a good time for us to discuss the difference between being confident and being obnoxious, so there was that.

The premise of the show is that there are 30 women lined up with buzzers in front of them. A man descends upon them (comes down in an elevator) to a song he chose as his ‘theme song’. At this point the women can choose to buzz that they are not interested. They have about 15 more minutes to decide if they like the guy or not. Some buzz out at tattoos, some guy’s bedroom looked like the jungle room in Vegas (there’s a jungle room in Vegas, right?), some just decide they don’t like the cut of the guy’s jib, whatever, until it gets down to, if the guy is lucky, a few women for him to choose from, or if he buzzes out totally, like pink shirt guy, he goes home and presumably cries into his hair gel (in this particular case.)

The boys and I were talking about what songs we would choose. They chose songs by LMFAO and I picked the McDonald’s song, you know, ‘dun dun dun da dun, I’m lovin’ it.’ The boys thought that was hilarious. My eldest said that all the buzzers would go off at that point before I even got to say anything. My youngest however said, ‘nope, I’m all in. That’s my dream girl.’
